Summary
In some situations, a full-size SD card may not be detected by a Plugable dock or hub when the card's physical lock switch is in the locked position.
The lock switch on a full-size SD card is intended to make the card read-only. It is not a security lock and does not prevent the card from being physically accessed. However, some card readers may not detect a full-size SD card correctly while the card is in the locked position.
Applicable To
- Plugable docks and hubs with built-in SD card readers
- Full-size SD cards inserted into the dock or hub's SD card slot
- SD cards with the physical write-protect switch set to the locked position
Answer
If a full-size SD card is not detected when inserted into a Plugable dock or hub, check the physical lock switch on the side of the SD card. If the switch is in the locked position, move it to the unlocked position, then remove and reinsert the card.
Unlocking the SD card before inserting it into the dock or hub is the recommended first troubleshooting step.
Why This Happens
Most full-size SD cards include a small physical lock switch on the side of the card. This switch is commonly used to request read-only behavior so that files on the card are not accidentally modified or deleted.
The lock switch does not encrypt the card, password-protect it, or prevent the card from being physically read. It only changes the write-protect state reported by the card reader and host system.
With some card readers, a locked full-size SD card may not be detected correctly while the switch is in the locked position. When this happens, the card may not appear in File Explorer, Finder, Disk Management, Disk Utility, or the operating system's removable storage list.
What To Check
- Remove the SD card from the Plugable dock or hub.
- Locate the small lock switch on the side of the full-size SD card.
- Move the switch to the unlocked position.
- Reinsert the SD card into the dock or hub.
- Check whether the card appears in the operating system.
If the card still does not appear, test the same SD card in another card reader or directly in another computer, if available. This can help confirm whether the issue is related to the card, the file system, the host computer, or the dock or hub.

Important Notes
- The lock switch is found on full-size SD cards. microSD cards do not typically have this physical switch.
- The locked position is intended to make the card read-only, not to protect the card from being read.
- If you need to use a full-size SD card in read-only mode, test the card with your specific dock or hub before relying on that workflow.
