Summary

The USBC-7IN1E supports one HDMI display at up to 4K 60Hz when connected to a compatible host system that supports DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode over USB-C.

Applicable To

  • Plugable USB-C 7-in-1 Hub with Ethernet (USBC-7IN1E)

  • Systems with USB-C, USB4, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4 ports that support DisplayPort Alt Mode

  • One HDMI display connected to the hub

Answer

Yes. The USBC-7IN1E can support one HDMI display at up to 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz, but only when the connected computer's USB-C port supports DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode.

If you are not sure whether your computer supports DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode, check the computer manufacturer's specifications or contact the computer manufacturer directly.

System Requirements for 4K 60Hz

To achieve 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz, the following are required:

  • A host system that supports DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode over USB-C, USB4, or Thunderbolt

  • A monitor that supports 4K at 60Hz over HDMI

  • An HDMI cable rated for HDMI 2.0 or higher

If any part of the setup does not meet these requirements, 4K 60Hz may not be available.

Why the Host Computer Matters

The HDMI port on the USBC-7IN1E uses the video signal provided by the computer's USB-C port. This means the hub cannot create a higher-resolution or higher-refresh-rate video signal than the host computer can provide.

How to Check Compatibility

If you are not sure whether your computer supports DisplayPort 1.4 over USB-C, check the computer manufacturer's specifications or contact the computer manufacturer directly.

Some computer specifications may describe this capability as:

  • DisplayPort 1.4

  • DP 1.4

  • USB-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode

  • USB-C with video output

  • Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, or newer, depending on the system

Please note that "USB-C" by itself does not guarantee video support or DisplayPort 1.4 support. Some USB-C ports support USB data only.

Important Note About USB Speeds

Some USB-C hubs reduce USB data speeds from USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 in order to reserve more bandwidth for video.

The USBC-7IN1E does not switch its USB 3.0 ports down to USB 2.0 speeds to enable 4K 60Hz. For this hub, the connected computer must support DisplayPort 1.4 in order to use 4K 60Hz through HDMI.
