Applicable To
- Plugable DisplayLink-based docking stations and USB graphics adapters
Problem Summary
DisplayLink relies on the computer’s graphics processor to render the Windows desktop before transmitting it to the connected monitors over USB. On some desktop computers, if the graphics processor does not detect a directly connected monitor, the DisplayLink monitors may show a black screen with only the mouse cursor visible.
This is especially common in KVM-style setups where all monitors are connected to a DisplayLink dock that is switched between two computers using a USB Sharing Switch, such as USB3-SWITCH2.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Ensure the DisplayLink driver is the latest version available from Plugable. To update the driver, please use the steps for your operating system:
- On Windows, install the latest graphics driver available from the computer or graphics card manufacturer’s support page.
- On macOS, install the latest available macOS updates. Graphics driver updates are included with macOS rather than distributed separately.
